BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION: Steel is widely used around the world for the construction of bridges from the very large to the very small. It is a versatile and effective material that provides efficient and sustainable solutions. Steel has long been recognised as the economic option for a range of bridges. It dominates the markets for long span bridges, railway bridges, footbridges, and medium span highway bridges. It is now increasingly the choice for shorter span highway structures as well. Landmark steel bridges embody good design, they are fast to build, and have stimulated the regeneration of many former industrial, dock and canalside areas.
CONSTRUCTION: is one of the most important steel-using industries, accounting for more than 50% of world steel production. Buildings - from houses to car-parks to schools and skyscrapers - rely on steel for their strength. Steel is also used on roofs and as cladding for exterior walls.
Steelmakers around the world are increasingly providing construction solutions that enable energy-efficient and low-carbon-neutral buildings. These solutions reduce the environmental impact over the structures’ life cycle and help to extend their life span through design for disassembly and reuse.
SHIPBUILDING: Steel is used for a ship hull for several reasons. It is strong and has enough corrosion resistance (rusting resistance) to last long enough to be useful. ... Wood of the quality to build a lasting hull is now in short supply and hence, very expensive. In addition, wood will burn, which steel will not.
